Join Legacy Park for the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, a fun community science event where you'll help count bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to support regional education and research across the Southeast. No experience is needed, we'll provide all materials, along with snacks, child-friendly activities, and educational resources about pollinators. It's a great opportunity to meet neighbors, explore nature, and make a meaningful contribution to conservation.

We'll start at the Legacy Park Administration Building and finish at the Trellis Ability Garden.

Participants with limited mobility are welcome to meet directly at the Trellis Ability Garden, which is fully wheelchair accessible. An indoor cooling station, accessible restrooms, snacks, drinks, and a garden-inspired craft will be available at Nickerson Cottage throughout the event.

We are pleased to announce the creation of the new Reflection Garden at Legacy Park.  This collaborative project between Legacy Park and tenant organization, Trellis Horticultural Therapy Alliance, adds a shady urban garden sanctuary with a circular group gathering space for up to 10 people. 

The new garden offers a short native plant loop trail that is wheelchair accessible, and meanders through the park-like setting in front of the existing Trellis Ability Garden. The garden’s design inspiration was the need for a place to serve a regular group of veterans living with PTSD and needing a calming place out of the hot sun of the garden for group mindfulness work and fellowship.

Trellis staff see the space as benefiting Legacy Park visitors as well.  A recent addition to the space is a Little Free “Seed” Library as part of a local girl scout troop project.

The garden is almost complete. Trellis is seeking funding through community donations for signage and upgraded benches. The Reflection Garden is located at Nickerson Cottage and is easily accessible from the Whitehead parking lot. Please stop by and refresh your mind, body and soul!

Weaving Grocery Bags into Sleeping Mats

August 11  |  6-8pm  |  Legacy Park Administrative Building Auditorium 

Did you know that the bag of bags you have in your pantry can be put to good use? Join Legacy Decatur and the Art Share Foundation to transform plastic bags into useful material. Then, during September's Truckin' Tuesday, we'll use a loom to communally weave the plastic material into sleeping mats for our unhoused neighbors.

Please note that the Decatur High School Cross Country team will be hosting a meet at Legacy Park on Saturday, August 15th. Please expect heavier traffic and limited parking from 7am-12pm.

The Moore Chapel Gardeners are the volunteers who, under the leadership of the DeKalb Master Gardeners, keep Legacy Park's chapel grounds so beautiful.
 
They meet to work every 1st Tuesday of the month at 9:00am. 
 
Those with a love of gardening are invited to join and help, either this month or in the months ahead. Let them know you're coming below.

Join Legacy Decatur Thursday, August 13, from 5:30-7:30pm or Saturday, August 15, from 9-11am to spend some time outdoors creating and maintaining Legacy Park's greenspace.

Participants will help create beautiful spaces for Legacy Park guests while enhancing their own gardening knowledge and connecting with nature

Most tasks will be outdoors and include planting, mulching, and weeding. In the case of inclement weather, indoor activities will include tasks such as organizing supplies.

Decatur Community Habitat is transforming the front yard of Isom Cottage into an ecosystem filled with native plants, food crops, and, of course, beauty!

Recently, volunteers built the first section of a habitat fence. A habitat fence is an efficient way to corral brush on your property while also creating a cozy habitat for critters to occupy over winter. 

Join them and build skills that you can take home to your own yard. Everyone is welcome!

Those who care deeply about Legacy Park’s forests and wetlands will find kindred spirits during Tree’s Atlanta’s monthly volunteer workdays.

Help restore the health of our protected greenspaces by removing invasive species and cultivating the native canopy that naturally creates a sustainable home for wildlife. It’s strenuous and rewarding work so be ready to break a sweat, get dirty and learn a lot while doing it!

The Amphibian Foundation offers engaging courses and events for all ages, from beginner programs to advanced certifications.

Led by expert instructors, each blends real science with hands-on learning, while supporting vital conservation work.

Join with Compassionate Atlanta on Thursday, August 20 from 5:45-7pm for "Serenity Within", a gentle pause in a busy world, inviting you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with yourself.

Together, participants will explore practices that strengthen inner calm and deepen one's capacity for compassion.

A voluntary donation of $20 is suggested. Proceeds benefit Legacy Park.

Tai Chi 4 Life provides detailed Tai Chi-Qigong instruction geared towards each individual's needs, building a health baseline first and then moving towards fitness.

Each class focuses on adding to your own practice, allowing each individual to foster their own healing, health and wellness over time. 

Classes are in-person with some also available via Zoom.
