Jane's Walk:

Fostering a Dynamic Community: The Evolution of Legacy Park

Sunday, May 3  |  4–5:30pm  |  Legacy Park

What can a park become when a community decides to reimagine it?

Join Joey Goodall for a walk through Legacy Park and its 140-year history that most Atlantans don't know. The land began as the Decatur Orphan's Home in 1877, operated by the United Methodist Church, and was strategically sold to the City of Decatur in 2017. Since then, a master planning effort has transformed it into a dynamic public space: office space for eighteen local nonprofits, a 400-meter track, new affordable apartments, a forest restoration managed by Trees Atlanta, and a Global Growers Garden, among other things.

The walk traces the park's historical sites and natural features, and looks honestly at the compromises that come with ambitious public planning.

Meet below the porch in front of the 500 building; park near the traffic circle.

An Evening of Shape Note Singing

Friday, May 15  |  7-9pm  |  Frank Hamilton School at Legacy Park

Come join the Frank Hamilton School for an evening of shape note singing! On May 15, from 7-9pm they will sing songs from the 2025 Revision of the Sacred Harp. No experience required! Newcomers, folks who want a refresher, or those that have been singing for years are all welcome!

The evening will begin with a singing school to get folks acquainted with the style of singing and notation, then proceed with people calling songs from the book they would like to sing with the class. Loaner books will be available.

Shape note music is a 200-year-old, uniquely American style of hymn singing. This tradition is also known as Sacred Harp, after the title of the best-known shape note tunebook. These haunting 4-part harmonies are sung in powerful, exuberant style, with singers seated in an open square.

Singing not for performance but for the joy of singing and the community of singers, to which newcomers are always welcome.

HOME v.2: Homeland

May 29 - July 18, 2026

Decatur Library  |  4th Floor Gallery

The Decatur Arts Alliance and the Decatur Land Trust are partnering with the Decatur Library to present the second edition of this powerful art show celebrating the multifaceted meaning of “Home.”  Nearly 60 artworks from across the county showcase in this powerful exhibition.

The 2026 exhibition theme looks to explore “homeland” as a geographical point of origin and a state of being. Works express cultural and ethnic elements, and elucidate the view of “home” from the immigrant to the expatriate, the displaced to the indigenous. How do we find “home” when we are away from the land of our forebears? What do newly arrived peoples do to preserve their culture and heritage? How do we honor and acknowledge the indigenous inhabitants of the lands upon which we all now live?

Artists were encouraged to explore these themes and more in their artwork, letting their creativity illuminate the diverse ways we experience and define “home” and their connection with a “HOMELAND.”

Decatur Community Habitat is transforming the front yard of Isom Cottage into an ecosystem filled with native plants, food crops, and, of course, beauty!

Recently, volunteers built the first section of a habitat fence. A habitat fence is an efficient way to corral brush on your property while also creating a cozy habitat for critters to occupy over winter.

Join them and build skills that you can take home to your own yard. Everyone is welcome!
