Help us keep Legacy’s trails in top form with our inaugural Legacy Park Trail Crew volunteer event: Thursday\, October 16 from 9-11am. \nLegacy Park has long been a favorite for dog walkers\, runners\, and bird watchers\, even before the City of Decatur acquired it from the United Methodist Children’s Home. Reverend Jack Amick and the Decatur High School Cross Country community turned their love of this place into a 5K course that’s since drawn thousands. \nToday\, visitors enjoy those marked trails as well as the narrower footpaths connecting to the East Decatur Greenway. But with that popularity comes wear. The trails now need some extra care—pruning back overgrowth\, picking up trash\, refreshing trail markers\, and reporting fallen branches or other safety concerns. You can help! \nSign up here.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 26 from 10am-2pm\, Legacy Decatur\, the nonprofit stewards of Legacy Park\, present Community Day\, an afternoon of environmental education and social connection. \nHeadlining the event will be the Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board’s Earth Day Festival\, featuring a variety of participants focused on ways to enhance your environmental footprint at home and throughout the community. In addition to sharing the work of the ESB\, the event will introduce Hometown Habitats\, a new City of Decatur program that recognizes Decatur residents for their commitment to sustainable practices in caring for their property. The first ever Hometown Habitat winner will be announced at the Festival\, along with an opportunity for you to nominate the front yard of a deserving Decatur neighbor. \nCome on by to learn\, share knowledge\, connect with green organizations and community builders\, and discover kindred spirits to help you on your journey to becoming a greener\, more connected resident. \nAlso featured will be the Spring Plant Sale and Open House from Trellis Horticulture Therapy Alliance where you can get your garden up and running and learn more about therapeutic horticulture and accessible gardening. \nAdd to that delicious food\, lively music\, vendors galore\, and a host of activities: \nPaint Love Art Mural –  Come join local nonprofit Paint Love to create a new mural on one of Legacy Park’s basketball courts! No experience needed – just swing by the court on the north side of campus (next to the chapel) and spend as much\, or as little\, time as you’d like. The Paint Love team will be there and ready to welcome you between 10am and 2pm.  \nDecatur Housing Authority Double Dutch Performance & face painting – Decatur Housing will be bringing the Trinity Walk Jumpers to perform jump rope demonstrations and to teach kids how to jump. They will also have Earth Day-themed crafts available for children to enjoy and take home. 12pm \nGGN Decatur Kitchen Garden tours – Take a tour of Decatur’s Kitchen Garden (DKG) with Global Growers Network – explore the garden’s diverse ecosystem and network of growers! Attendees can learn about the history of the land\, permaculture design techniques used to sustain the garden\, as well as diverse gardening styles reflecting the backgrounds of growers from countries such as Bhutan\, Afghanistan\, and Nepal. We’ll plant native vegetation along the wetland area\, stabilize the stream bank\, provide food for wildlife\, and provide a calm and aesthetically welcoming environment for the community to learn about the importance of wetland areas. \nWear clothes appropriate to getting dirty and bring gloves and digging tools to augment what Legacy Decatur will also be providing. Water will be provided but please bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Lunch will be served as we wrap up at noon. \nAll types of ecosystems are important but wetlands are particularly vital for stormwater management\, pollution filtration\, and wildlife habitat.
